Set alarm without hearing alarm on set

If I have forgotten an alarm and go to bed how can I choose a loud song, set an alarm on max volume without waking the hous?
This is what I want to do:
Set an alarm.
Chose an alarm sound
Slide alarm sound level from minimum to maximum.
But I want to do this without the chosen alarm sounding / whilst I am setting it /
I tried plugging in earphones but the alarm still came out of the phone.
So what's the solution?

Silence the alarm, choose the tone, then unmute it using something other than the system volume control - I have a task in Tasker that sets the alarm volume to max and that doesn't play a sound while doing it, and I expect any other automation app or audio profile/manager app will do the same.

I use Alarm Clock Plus, and it has never, ever, played an alarm tone when I set an alarm.

It will, if you choose to set it to do so, Over-ride any other setting that is made on the phone when that prescribed alarm occurs. Indeed, I have it programmed to Over-Ride all other volume settings. Even if the volume control is at minimum and I go to bed.... come wake up time, the Alarm goes out at Full volume.... then the phone returns back the way it was before.

I think the key step here is choosing the alarm file.

On my phone when I choose an alarm I am given a choice of "media storage" or various file explorers.

If I select "media storage", then it shows a list of all my alarms and plays as a scroll through them.

If I select solid explorer (or ES file explorer or whichever one you have), then I have to know what directory to go to in order to find the alarm files, but if I can find them and recognize them from the name, I can pick a sound file without playing anything If this is what you want to do then:
1 - make sure you have a file explorer installed
2 - go to settings / apps / media storage and clear defaults... so you'll have a choice to use the file explorer for sound picking rather than the system "media storage" app.

Picking a new sound file, versus what I do which is simply set an alarm, is quite different.
Once I have the Alarm Tone set, it never changes. "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" wakes me up every time.

Yes, that is my point. The op mentioned choosing a sound file. I'm thinking maybe that part of the process is when the sound is occuring. Maybe op can comment.
