Setting email to only retireve new messages

I am new to Android. I use POP3 email and Outlook for my email as a rules - I only want the messages appear on my phone if they have not yet been downloaded into Outlook. Is there any way I can do this? I have tried the email client that came with the phone and K9 as well but have had no luck.

Not really. POP accounts are very old tech and are very limited in their capabilities. POP clients will download whatever is on the server.

If Outlook doesn't leave mail on the server then your phone can only retrieve whatever Outlook has not downloaded.

Mail is left on the server after I download it to outlook. The problem is that it is then downloaded again onto my phone where I don't want it to be - I only want to use my phone to check emails I haven't yet seen - instead I get far more than I want. My old simpler phone only picked up unread emails so it must be possible.
