Setting tones for alerts

I know how to get different tones for the alerts on my phone and how to set them. But as far as I can see, all the alerts share the same sound. I have a very hard time hearing my alert for new text. But when I put something I can hear, I also get the same sound for my email. I don't want my phone blasting at me every time I get a new email. On the other phones I've owned the alerts each had different sounds.

Is there any sort of app that allows you to assign the sound for the message separate from the e-mail tone?

If not, is there any way to tell the phone NOT to announce e-mails?

I have an Epic 4G on sprint if that makes any difference.

The problem is that you're setting the system notification (Settings->Sound). If you want to set notifications for your apps then check the settings for each app.

Disable notifications for your email app.

you can set individual alerts for sms, mail, calendar notif etc. in the corresponding app

ie. look under messaging -> settings to set the sms alert for instance
