Help Severe Battery Drain

Sgfox

Lurker
Hello,
Just last night I had charged my phone up 98%, unplugged it because I didn't want to go to bed with it plugged in, and went to bed. This morning, I woke up and it was at 3%! I go to grab my charger which is right near my bed and as soon as I plug it in, it dies. Once I turned it back on, I go to Battery part of the settings to find the culprit that is using all my battery. It says Android OS used 89% of my battery along with Android System with 5%, Phone Idle at 2%, and Cell Standby and WiFi both at 1%. All my apps were closed before I locked my screen and went to bed. There is no reason my phone should lose its nearly full charge overnight with no use at all. I've been reading that the S6 is in no comparison to the S5 or S7. I've had this phone for maybe a year now and the battery has never been as great as it was promised. What should I do?

Join me in letting the world know the S6 is a sick joke, and that Samsung should be ashamed of themselves, if not boycotted?

I've already decided my next phone will NOT be another Samsung

For a start, try clearing the system cache. Keep in mind that the android system interacts with all the different packages installed by apps. Very possibly, one of your apps is causing this sudden problem.
Once you have cleared your system cache (post if you want precise instructions) start looking at your recently installed or updated apps. If you cannot identify the precise app I would then, temporarily, remove batches of apps (half of them, and then half of the remaining etc. etc.) till this battery drain stops.
Best of luck. Over 90% of the time it's not the phone but rather, installed software.

Do you mean the cached data? Probably not. I'm not sure what the system cache is, so could you give me instructions? Thank you so much for replying.

My S6 just started doing this the last few days. No new apps installed, and no updates that I know of.

Is there any way to find a list of what apps might have been auto-updated over wifi? It has to be something recently changed that all of a sudden has caused this change. I've had this phone for months with no battery usage issues, and even after the marshmallow update battery usage seemed fine.

It's just the built-in non-replaceable battery giving up. The S7 is out now, did you expect the battery to last longer?

Here you go.
How to wipe the system cache on the Galaxy S6
If it's your Android system that is acting weird and not just an app or two, you might want to clear the system cache, also known as wiping the cache partition. The most common time this is useful is straight after an Android update, when battery drain, glitches, crashes or other weirdness can occasionally affect your system.

1. Turn off your Galaxy S6.

2. Press and hold Power, Volume Up and the Home button.

3. You'll see a blue screen with the Android on it, then you'll be taken to the recovery menu.

4. Use the volume buttons to scroll and highlight Wipe Cache Partition. Press Power to confirm.

7. Your Galaxy S6 will reboot and recompile all of your apps. It might take a little while to re-cache them all, but once it is done you should have a Galaxy S6 running as smooth as can be.

Thank you so much, Snakeyes. I thought it might be a bit too complicated for this old man but it was actually quite easy. Saw immediate results and it is still working days later. Appreciated the help.
