Sharing HDD

Hi everyone.

I like to get some help with this problem.
I've bought a Android mini PC yesterday and i want to put files on the HDD thats connected to the mini PC.
I want to connect with that HDD via my windows laptop.

So on my latop connect with the HDD thats connected with the mini PC (running on Android 4.0.4).

Does the HDD have to be connected to both the laptop & the mini pc? Can you not just unplug it and plug it into your laptop, transfer the files & then plug it back in? Failling that, you can upload to dropbox & redownload them onto your drive through the mini pc....? Not really sure what you're asking tbh...
