Should I apply at Verizon?

I really enjoy mobile technology. I literally read blogs and forums all day long from my phone so I can keep up with the latest devices, technologies, and news.

It would be amazing to get paid to talk to people about phones. I understand that there would be a lot more involved, but you know what I'm saying.

It depends mostly on what job you'd be applying for. If you're talking about a call-center tech support job, be prepared. (disclaimer: The following is based off a couple different jobs, neither of which was Verizon specifically.)

Only about 15-20% of the people you talk to (and that may be an overestimate) will have as deep an understanding as you. Most will know only what they do to make their phone work, and know that it's not working now. You'll be frustrated around half the time, on an average shift.

Worse than that are the calls where the caller has a greater understanding of the technology involved (or believes he does). You'll spend the first 3-5 minutes of your call listening to him explain exactly what piece of the network's infrastructure is to blame for his trouble, and how there's absolutely NO WAY he's going to subject himself to troubleshooting, since he knows exactly what the problem is. On those calls, make SURE to go through your normal troubleshooting steps to the letter. Usually the fix is some routine step that the user skipped over.

With billing, you're going to have an easier time, as long as you do your homework. Spend your first couple weeks writing down/typing up a brief description of EVERY question you're asked by a customer. Study it, and learn how to quickly answer, or find the answer to, these questions. Your time as a billing rep will be far easier for it.

As for sales, or a job in one of the stores... well, you probably didn't need that soul, anyway.

From a pay, benefits and perks stance, it is worth it. Everything leo said is true. It can be trying but sometimes rewarding.

Never turn a hobby into a job. It will take all the fun out of it for you. Maybe look more to write blogs and reviews about new tech, although that will be a tough field to break into and make money doing.

Listen to me... Listen VERY Carefully. DO NOT APPLY AT VERIZON WIRELESS. Block their recruitment webpage, turn off your computer and never think about it again. I'm going on 10 years with the company and if the economy didn't suck soo much and I didnt need benefits for my family I would run as fast as I could. Verizon Wireless has literally SUCKED the life out of me every day for the past 9 1/2 yrs. I've never had a job that I have to force myself to get dressed for in the morning. When I first started I loved it, but every year it gets worse. They add more policies in place, make the work place more strict, make your goals higher and higher, all the while treating morale like it doesn't exist. You can put in as many "Suggestions" to management/directors/VP's as you want they treat them like toilet paper. If I wasnt' vested with stock/benefits and good vacation/seniority I would run quickly. Heck if I could just find a job that pays at least $20/hr I would take a little paycut to retrieve my sanity. Each day I come in there is a new policy thought up by some guy in the looney bin that makes no sense, you'll never be able to achieve it then a few days later they realize that take it away and replace it with something even more ludacris. When I worked in Customer Service I had THE MOST positive customer feedback in the center but THE LOWEST monitoring scores from my management team. According to VZW scoring matrix I was a horrible person to speak to on the phone, but my customers all disagreed. I never had someone ask for a Supervisor, I was easy going and reasonable. A lot of customers would only call my extension but their ridiculous policies claimed I failed my calls?? Then because of that you dont get a raise that year. Most people think its their plan just to save money even though they rake in profits hand over fist each year.... We used to have awesome employee plans $6 a month unlimited, now we only get 50% off and have to pay 2yr contract pricing on phones AND sign contracts with Early Termination Fees AS EMPLOYEES. So if they fire me and I can't afford 5 lines with Androids and Data plans I have to pay $175 per line to leave, heck even if I'm layed off at no fault of my own I have to pay the ETF. And yet they make record profits each year. What kind of company treats their employees like that? One year I was in an accident and my dr said I would need an extra 10 minute break each hour to change my bandages, etc... They said "Ok thats fine but you'll need to work an hour later each day to make up for it" they wouldn't even give that to me. I was even fine with it being unpaid, but they want an injured guy to work longer than a 9hr day when I'm already in pain and it hurts to finish my 9hrs. The HR department is the MOST unreasonable HR department I've ever seen. My HR manager actually asked me "Who I thought I was" because she didn't know what the laws were for leave while on active duty status for the military, and I kept telling her but she didn't believe me until I got a lawyer involved then says I'm being disrespectful to a member of management by telling her how to do her job and trying to make her look bad. I wouldn't have needed to make her look bad if she did her job instead of sitting at her desk doing her nails all day. I'm telling you the only way to make it past Supervisory positions is to not think for yourself, kiss management butt, and agree with EVERY SINGLE THING they say even when it makes no sense. Then if they make a mistake plan on it being your mistake because they wont want to look bad to Senior management.

So NO don't apply for Verizon Wireless unless its the absolute LAST THING on your list of job opportunities. I'm a computer geek too A+ certified, college degree in Information technology so I thought it would be great. I was wrong... IT SUCKS. They have the best service and the WORST management.

AFAngryWarrior, I worked for VZW from 2002 to 2008 and know exactly how you feel. I got friends/family that work at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, various other companies, government agencies, military, and even the Secret Service and they all complain about the same crap (poor policies, working conditions, bad management). VZW was actually one of the better experiences. I now work for myself and I'm much happier.

I understand where you're coming from AFA. But, for some people, they are getting a great benefit and making more than they would otherwise, especially without degrees.

I have not been there for 10 years, I am going into my 5th year. I was never a customer service rep. I got hired off the street into data tech support and I now work in marketing. I have a very good relationship with all the people I work with and while I do agree that the policy changes can be absurd, it sounds like you have some slackers where you work. Corporate vision is made, policy is made. It is up to the front line people to enforce it.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have had the benefit of working with some really outstanding people and things are not being followed at the local level. Believe me, there are people who I can name in our place who are a complete waste of time and should be fired, but hey, I only see them and how they work on a daily basis. I am not the one doing the evaluations without seeing daily performance, so I see the disparity.

BTW, you are wrong about ETFs and employees being fired or separated. Look it up in Infomanager please.

AngryWarrior I feel your pain. I work in the customer service industry, not cellular. My management sounds the same as yours was. This is the demise of corporate America. The managers at my job can only rate your quantity not quality (which they preach in every meeting) as they are too dumb to figure out on their own.

In other words, all of this complaining should not deter the OP from a potential job opportunity since (generally) every large corporation in the US is the same. I know, I've worked for a couple.

I work for one now actually, and all of this sounds very familiar lol.

I am glad I read this thread. I have not earned a penny so far this year, but it sure beats working for someone else.
