Help should i update my sony xperia x10 android version?

i recently bought a japanese docomo sony xperia x10 (their version is so-01b). the android version is 2.1 and the phone is a little laggy. I would like to know should i update to newer android version to make the phone smoother? if so, then what version is the best for xperia x10 right now (ics or android 3.0)
