Help Shutdown when using data connection

Since some weeks ago, when I use my data connection (3G, GPRS,...), after some minutes, my HTC Tattoo suddenly shuts down. It doesn't warn about low battery, but very often (but not always) when I restart it again, the battery is almost empty, even if it was almost full previously.
It does not happen if the telephone is idle or when plugged in, but it has also happened when using wifi instead of the data connection.
I am using CyanogenMod-7.1.0.1-click. Could updating to 7.2 help? Or resetting the battery history?
Would buying a new battery help?

I tried restricting data communications to 2G instead of 3G and I could use the browser for a while at home, but it failed soon when I tried it at work. And I don't see anything wrong with the battery contacts.

I bought a new battery and the problem seems solved.
