a sidebar appeared after a recent up date. how do I get rid of the sidebar it is a pita.

The bar you're referring too is most likely the multi-window bar. To remove it (or the tab) just long press the back button.
To remove it more permanently, slide down the notification area and swype left or right untill you see it's icon (two overlaying windows) and tap that so its no longer green.
You may have to go into settings>display>notification options to add the button to the notification bar.
