Help Side Effects of Low Storage

Mostly Harmless

Android Expert
One of my biggest complaints about the N1 has always been with the lack of internal memory. I have been dealing with the "Low Storage" warning for over a year now and have become quite aware of the effects it has on the phone. The following are observations, I am not a programmer so I can't explain why the phone works this way:

-The "Low Storage" warning doesn't seem to come up on a specific number. At times it will come up under 20mb, while I have seen it go down to 16mb without a warning.

-Once I get the "Low Storage" warning my gmail notifications no longer work and new emails will not load. I can see in my box that there are new incoming messages but I can not actually see the message.

-The gtalk notifications and messages no longer come up either.

-GPS becomes erratic and less accurate. This is the latest item that I have noticed. Two weeks I was playing golf for a few days in a row and was using an app to give me distance to the hole. It worked fine the first day, but then I downloaded something and it brought up the "Low Storage" warning. The next day I tried using the app and my location was all over the place and at times the GPS "icon" would go off without my interference. I promptly deleted the app and everything went back to normal.

Nothing is more frustrating about this phone then the lack of storage. I haven't able to install apps in a long time and even had to uninstall a lot of my favorite apps. I really hope to see the next Nexus soon.

You left out the worst part of the low space notice - once you get below 20 MB, you no longer receive SMS messages. They are sent off into limbo where the network drops them on the floor, presumably it thinks they are sent, but the phone doesn't receive them. There is no indication that this is happening, so the only way you find out is when your friends get mad at you for not replying to their texts.

The low storage space is indeed a minus for the N1. (That and the crappy camera, but that's for all HTC phones, not just the N1.)
