I've realised the beauty of having no signal all day (crap antenna).I get to have a nice peaceful day with no interuptions. The downside is,i don't get any work enquiries until i get home.

Ouch - that's terrible! (well, the part that you will now have to work after getting home)
Was it a bad tower in your area? or did you mean bad antenna on your phone?

It must be my phone as everyone else generally has more signal than my phone,no matter which network or handset.I love the LG Nexus phones i just wish they would work.

Try a different radio/modem version... No one radio is technically better than another just because it's a newer version . One radio may have better reception on your N5 than it would on my N5 and it can also improve battery life as well.
Generally I'll test a radio out for a couple days, monitor it and check the signal strength.
If it's constantly searching for signal or switching from LTE, H+, HSPA etc.... Then that can/will drain the battery significantly.
Personally for me, I've found that the KTU84M radio works the best on my N5.
That was through trial and error to figure out which radio worked the best for my N5.

At the weekend with my friends I was the only one with a reliable signal, I have a Nexus 5 on ThreeUK. Bizarely one of my friends struggling for signal was also on ThreeUK but had an iPhone

How do i try a different radio/modem version, remember i'm a technophobe and there is no LTE here.

You can get the radio's/modem's from here -http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/Nexus_5/Modems

There are 2 versions for each radio, a radio.img and a radio.zip.
If your N5 is rooted then you flash the radio.zip through your custom recovery.
If it's not rooted, then you would flash the radio.img through fastboot.

The next time this happens, when you are with somebody else (on the same Cellular network), compare your signal strength readings with theirs - settings/about/signal.
Also, check with your carrier to see if they can send out a profile update (and perhaps even a PRL update) to your phone. That may help
