bad download likely. or invalid update file.

Are you trying to use an OTA image on a custom recovery perhaps? (TWRP, ClockWorkMod, etc) are you rooted? stock images don't work on rooted devices.

Last time i saw 'signature verification failed' i was attempting to update a Galaxy S3 that was rooted and running the stock recovery. i assumed that it failed because the device was rooted.

Are you rooted? if so you need to find a ROM that is available on your rooted device or find out who made the ROM you're running now and see if the developer has an update. i suggest XDA if that's the case. many developers post change logs there.

If not, then perhaps you just tried an update that is not meant for your device variant (aka a T-Mobile ROM for a Verizon device). there may not even be an update for you device. I am a bit irked someone got an Android 5.0 OTA for his LG G3 while mine is stuck still in 4.4.2.

Well that there explains it. rooting a device kills the ability to get Over-The-Air updates (OTA) from Google or whomever made your device's software. just like Jailbreaking an iPhone kills the ability to get the newest iOS version as it is released.

The workaround would be installing a custom ROM and simply get the flashable ZIP file from the ROM developer soon as he/she has an update to it ready, or just flash a ROM with a more current version of Android.
