I am just about to buy a droid. I am assuming my aol account will work on this? I just keep hearing about gmail.....

If you buy an Android-based phone, your cellular provider will connect it to your G-Mail account. If you don't have a G-Mail account, the rep will create one for you.

You should still be able to access your AOL account by using your browser.

You should also be able to use the email app (not the Gmail app) and set up your AOL account with that too so you won't have to use the browser every time you want to check your email.

If you have POP or IMAP access to your AOL account you should be able to set it up with the Droid.
