Help silly question

Hi All, my name is Chris, had my samsung galaxy s3 a year now and love it. Lately though my phones been running a lot and burning my battery down when I am not doing anything. Suddenly my phone will get real hot in my pocket ! I installed the app called wakelock and it can show me what's using heavy battery or something like that. I know some about my phone but theres much more out there to know. It shows that my maps app keeps running, so I look to force stop it. It goes off for a bit but kicks back on a while later. I'm still unsure if rooting would be the right way to go ? As I said, I'm not that savy.I appreciate any and all help.

Is this the stock map app? Is there any other app you installed prior to this?

Yes, this is thee stock app, I have added the street view one as well, but rarely use it.

Hello there scout!
Check in menu/settings/location services.
What boxes are "checked"?
I had an issue with "maps" consuming alot of battery....I went and just checked only the boxes that said, "Standalone GPS services".
That helped alot.
Try that to see if it helps
