Help SIM not recognised

Hi, I have just received a present of a GT-15800 Galaxy Apollo, however when I put my SIM in it, it says that no network can be found. The network is T Mobile is T Mobile, I don't know if the phone has to be set up or not, the instructions are pretty vague. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

try another sim card before trying anything else.
is it sim locked?

When it was bought the guy said it was unlocked, have also tried new Sim card. Icon showing no signal. Thanks.

Took the phone back and they sorted it out.
Another question, how do I, or can I get notification of texts I send that it has been delivered? Thanks.
