Firstly, try turning it off and on again. If that doesn't fix it, turn the device off, remove the battery and remove the sim card. Check the sim for damage first. if none, replace it back in the phone. Then replace the battery and power on the device.
It seems that these phones have a tendency to eat sim cards. My GFs phone had a similar issue and we replaced the sim card with a new one at the local carrier store and it worked fine from then on.
