Root Simple question

I have a simple question. I want to root my Ace, install CWM and then Cyanogen. Do I have to do a factory reset when installing Cyanogen, or I can skip it (I read that I have to do it, but I need to know if it's important, if it's not - I won't do it)?

It is very important to do a factory reset after rooting/roming your device just because if you do not some things might not work. It is suggested with each new ROM you put on your device that you perform a factory reset, now if you are upgrading to different Nightly versions of Cyanogen Mod it isn't necessary to perform a factory reset, otherwise i would most certainly strongly recommend to perform one to avoid issues on your device.

Yes, as DC says it is vital. My expectation is that the phone may not even boot if you switch from a Samsung ROM to CM without doing this, and the chance of it working without faults would be very small indeed.

Okay. Is there a way to do a working copy of my apps, so after the reset I could bring them back?

Yes, a factory reset is recommended after flashing the rom, but at times the rom might work well even without doing it but its possible that it'll develop snags and glitches after some time, so its best to just do it, there's no harm in doing it unless the developer specifically says not to do it.

Use titanium backup to backup all your apps and their data. Its the best backup tool for root users.

So, everything should go like...
1. Root.
2. Install CWM.
3. Install Titanium Backup.
4. Make backups (I should keep them in the PC, I guess).
5. Make a factory reset.
6. Install Cyanogen.

Right?

You can install titanium right after rooting, the app only needs root access to function. You can keep the backups in the sd card.

You asked about doing a factory reset after flashing a rom, and we recommended you to do that. Before flashing a rom, the procedures differ according to the rom you are flashing or the procedure given by the developer. Like if you are doing a CM nightly upgrade, you can straight away install the rom without and wipes to keep the user data safe.

Mostly we do the following steps in the recovery(cwm) for flashing a new rom:
1.Factory reset, wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache.
2.Format /system, /data and /cache.
3.Install the rom's zip file.
4. Do a factory reset again.

They may differ according to the rom and its developer.

Okay, thanks! I have gathered enough info, I also have good tutorials for each major step. Going to root & install everything tomorrow.

Now, I have another question. I have rooted my Ace a few days ago just for the sake of it and after it was done, I did a factory reset from recovery. After my phone restarted it was on a loop. It was restarting non-stop. Why did that happened and how do I avoid it happening again?

Don't know why that happened but there was no need of doing a factory reset after rooting. You could try the reset again and along with that wipe the cache partition too and if possible wipe dalvik cache also if you have a custom recovery(cwm). That might solve your bootloops.

Factory reset doesn't delete the root & CWM, right?
