Simply Walking app dropping GPS

Android 10. Been using Simply Walking for a few years on several phones, now on a TCL A507DL. Used to just turn on app, turn off screen & walk, app worked as it should, tracking my walk. Now app seems to disconnect from GPS when screen is turned off. Timer runs, but distance stops at about 0.2 miles (walk about 5 miles). App does continue to gps track if screen is left on, but can't really do that if it's in my pocket, as opposed to sitting in my car's console w/screen on. Why might the phone be disconnecting from gps when screen is turned off?
