Sinc'ing the Hero. Impossible to connect Hero to PC

Please please help me, Im getting crazy.
I just got my Hero (which is also my first Android phone ) yesterday and I'm absolutely unable to properly install "HTC sync".
I downloaded it from the HTC page carefully follwing the instructions, on a 32bit Vista (intel quad core+ 4 gig ddr2) and on a netbook (Msi wind + 2gig ddr2) with win XPsp3, but while everything on the phone's screen sems OK and it says that the phone is connectd via USB, the window of HTC sync has the "connect now " buttons grayed out, and the icon in the tray says "disconected".

Itis a driver problem, because every time I try to install the drivers I get the message that says "Error" and that some files are missing.
I am also unable to uninstall the drivers because I get the same message.
I tried everything: the repair installation , to uninstall, and reinstall, but nothing seems to work.

Whoever will be able to suggest a working solution will be remembered in my testament and in my prayers.
I also have a Nokia N97 and an HTC touchHD and never gave me any problems, so far I'm far from happy of Android.
Does anyone else have troubles with HTC sync and/or the drivers?
And specially: is there a solution to this horrible situation?

Annoying isn't it :D

Yeah I think lots of people had this. While it's plugged in for synch, turn it off and on again (as any good IT technician will tell you) and synch should find the phone.

If that fails check out xda-dev.

Thanks
Phil

Thank you PhilS
Just a question: what is XDA dev?
And what do you exactly mean whith "Check out"? Is it a Forum or a Wiki page, or something like that?
Coz your quick fix does'nt seem to work.

I have here also A Nokia N97 which according to some folks should be a buggy phone, but compared to this hero is a jewel of tech and simplicity.
To tell you the truth Im quite disappointed by this device and since this it is the only android device I've tried Im a bit disappointed with all the OS.
What do you think?
Do you like it?

Another question if you don't mind:
Is it possible that it does'nt exist a voice dialing application for Android?
Even the chepest phones have it.
I had it on all my phones since the last 10 years or so, and it is necessary to every driver.
I would pay for it but I can't find any.

i brought a htc hero, i have been trying to connect it to my pc with the usb cable provided so i can transfer music on to it, the pc does not detect a device though, wen i go to toolbar to safely remove devices its located there to remove but i cant see it in my computer as a removable device

I had this problem, I couldnt SYNC my Hero, it sounds simple, but this is what I did,

I turned my phone off, then back on again. I opened HTC SYNC on the PC first, then connected my phone to the lead, then the lead to the USB slot, then I waited, then the SYNC logo popped up in my notification tray on the Hero, so I clicked SYNC, then after about 15-20 seconds, it SYNCed to my PC. Hope this helps
