so my google-fu is not as good as it used to be and I am running into some deadends as far as websites devoted to Android 3rd party apps.

Does anyone know any/several sites that have 3rd party Android apps for download?

I've personally found the following, and I am wondering if there are more:

Applying common sense and one's own best judgment, for a change, goes a long way to security.
You can sometimes find little gems in 'unregulated waters'. You'll never find those in waters that have been 'cleaned up' before you got there...

Emphatic YES I do. The alternatives is to allow large corporations a excuse to charge $ to and require you to give up your Social Security Number just to have the privelege of writing a personal app for your own phone. Just another case of those that trade liberty for security deserve (and most often in the end get) neither.

Don't be lazy or ignorant, learn about the dangers and take some caution when going out into the real world.
