Skins - I don't get it

I know there are skins within apps like pure calendar - but are there good skins that you can download which are not tied to apps?

I did a search and found the android-faqs ones and they all look crappy.

Ok so I think I'm getting skins and themes confused. A skin is for a particular app? but a theme would change the background and icons? Is that right?


and which theme programs are ok? can I write my own?
