Skype on Mint (Cinnamon)

I can't get the mike and speakers to work at the same time. I have version 4.1 something of Skype and I see it can be a bear from some fora. Usually it seems to be the web cam, but that works.

The mike is a fairly cheap one with a stand that is hard for the cats to knock over.

There's nothing wrong with the mike or speakers in Mint itself. Mint sees both and tests them just fine. So I'm thinking it's Skype.

Where can I find an older copy of Skype? I searched, and I'm not even looking at some of the sites that turned up. I'd like the previous version, and advice as how to tell certain apps NOT to update.
 
You won't find an older version. Uninstall Skype and re install it.. that's always the first try..

Second is to go to your settings and make sure all the necessary drivers are installed for the Mic and speakers. Ik I had that problem when I installed ubuntu. Most mics don't like linux very well because its not what they were designed for. It could be possible that in certain instances the Mic is sucking up all the power if its an older computer.

Last thing I can think of at the moment is that Skype is configured this way so you don't hear yourself when your talking. The echo would occur if you spoke into the Mic and it came out the recipients speakers and back into their Mic. There may be a setting to change this, but I would doubt it.

One last thing I thought of, but it may be a long shot is to update Skype further. They may have realized this problem and fixed it, but knowing Microsoft their head is so far up eachothers butts all they hear is the gurgling of eachothers lunches. Nah Microsoft isn't that bad, I just hold grudges haha
 
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Skype. Per a post on another help page, I got rid of Pulse and installed Alsa. At least with Alsa you can test everything. The mike works, the speakers work. I can hear test sounds. If I speak over the mike you can hear it very well. It has to be Skype. Webcam and mike are generic. The webcam works.

Alsa shows all the settings. I've tried them all. Skype worked on Ubuntu 11.04. I had the old copy from the repository and never updated it. It worked just fine.

My daughter lives in England. We tried Skype on Mothers Day. She could hear me, but I couldn't hear her. So that meant the mike was working but the other audio was not.
If I could hear the speakers and tried a test call, it didn't go.
Why isn't there an old version for Linux? I can find old stuff for Windows and Mac.

We finally said to hell with it and used Viber on the phone.

I know Windows has its collective head up its butt. That's why I'm using Mint.
 
Hmm. I'm an ubuntu user other than android so I must say that beyond what I've suggested, there's not much more I can say other that Microsoft stinks :p could have used google hangouts, that works pretty easily enough
 
I just installed Skype myself and tried a test call. It said there is an audio playback problem. I'm on Arch.

EDIT: I may have found a solution if you're running 64 bit. I had to install lib32-libpulse in order to get audio output working. I should mention it was already working for everything else except Skype
 
I am running 64 bit. Where do you get that lib32*?
Also I deleted Pulse Audio and installed Alsa. Would there be a file for that?

You can find old versions of Skype. There's a website devoted to storing old versions of programs. It's called oldversion.com.

They have Skype.

Edit: Sorry - I glossed over the fact that you're using Mint and not Windows.
