skype question

Just got my first android phone, loving it!

I have a question about skype. Since I'm keeping my phone off the networks, is there any way to use skype mobile? It tells me it can't find my number (I don't have one) and closes immediately. Can I just get a skype number, like on the desktop client? Is this how the carriers prevent free calling? Is there a workaround or alternative?

Thanks!

Skype currently works by using your data connection, so you'll need an account/number with Verizon (which is the only network it works on atm).

Well, it works on 3 in the UK too. You could always use Nimbuzz and set it to use your Skype credit, etc. but again that will incur data charges unless you're on a WiFi network.

So, there is no workaround for getting free skype-to-skype calls, for instance, over wifi? I need a Verizon number and dataplan?

Not yet. An official universal Skype app is due out before the end of 2010. It's supposed to support video calling as well.
