Skype Question

I've installed Skype on my SGS2 and it's very good. I presume it needs to be active if I expect to receive calls. I don't suppose that if I close it down it will wake up if anyone calls me?

If I keep it open am I using my data allowance or is my data allowance only depleted when I actually make or receive a call?

I have noticed that when I close all apps using Task Manager, which I do regularly, that Skype is still open. I've downloaded Stop Skype, which works perfectly but I'm hoping that I shouldn't have to use it very often.

I have a theoretical unlimited data contract (subject to 'fair usage') so even if Skype does use my data allowance when it's open, is it a small amount and does it matter?

As you can guess, I'm a real newbie to the world of smartphones.

Thanks.

You need to be 'signed in' with the app running in the background to receive calls, there should be a skype icon in the notification bar.

It might use a little but of data to update who's available etc, but I can't imagine it would be much.
From the sounds of your data plan, you'll be fine. "Fair Usage" would only come into play if you started using huge amounts of data, that which would not reasonably be expected from a private customer. You'd basically have to be torrenting movies or something constantly for it to come into play, and I think they give you a warning...but I could be wrong.

If you use an app or a task manager to kill it, you obviously won't receive calls.

Don't worry if you have apps running in the background, Android is designed to work like that.

Thank you, that's very reassuring. I shall keep it open all day.

Thought Skype ran only on wifi on Android? At least in the US? Didn't V cut a deal with Skype?
I think it did run on both 3G and wifi on Nokia. I had a C6 and installed Skype from a different source that OVI USA. OVI USA said I couldn't have it. It's still on the C6 which is in London with a family member. And it's working.

My Skype works, use my own wifi. I can use Skype on the phone and computer at the same time.

You had me worried for a minute there! I've only used my Skype on wi-fi so I unplugged the router and bingo! Skype worked just as well on the cellular network.

I'm in the U.K. by the way.
