Slow/laggy alarm clock

Anyone else's alarm clock really slow/laggy when setting an alarm? I see my CPU jump to 100% and it takes a good 10 seconds just to set an alarm. Know of any good free alternatives?

I hadn't noticed the alarm clock being slow when setting an alarm, but it can be pretty horrendous when the alarm is actually ringing.

I'm consious that I get up earlier than my housemates at 5am and don't want to wake them up so I grab the phone as soon as it starts ringing and attempt to silence it.

The problem is, often when you pick it up you end up rotating it and it takes several seconds to switch between portrait and landscape mode - as it's processing this transition the soft-buttons become un-pressable as they relocate themselves. The alarm continues ringing for 5, 10 or more seconds while the GUI sorts itself out and becomes responsive again.

Does an alarm clock really need to support switching between portrait and landscape mode? Is there really any benefit in allowing a ringing alarm clock to switch orientation, especially when it's making a racket and all you want to do is shut it up but can't because the GUI has stopped being responsive?
