Slow pc = virus (or not)

Rgarner

Android Expert
The pc has been really slow the past couple of days. I wonder if it could be a virus. Is there anything else I should check? It probably doesn't have anything to do with the "important new" Windows updates it's mentioned, but all it does is claim to be searching for them without actually downloading anything as far as I know.

What Anti Virus are you using? First thing is to run a full scan and see if it reports anything amiss.
Other things that might be a sign that all is not well include:
Lots of instances of svchost running , and greater than usual CPU and memory use.
I'm not a Windows expert by any means, there are others here bette rplaced to offer more detailed advice.

Thanks, it seems too be running better now. Maybe it was just a problem with the ISP. Anyway, it's a Dell Inspiron, about 5 or 6 years old, with Windows 8.1. I'm not sure how to find the other details. It has both Malware Bytes and Avast, but I don't know how to make them run.

Seriously, I don't know how to make the antivirus programs run. Please tell me how. Should I try to make them scan the whole pc, and how would I do that?
