Help Slow wifi speeds

My nexus 10 is having issues with slow wifi speeds. Sometimes it comes to a crawl. I use speedtest and sometimes it is down to 1 mbps. Other times it is up to 10. Looking at the past results, it has been up to 50. My phone always tests at 50 or above on the wifi. Is there a setting somewhere that might be wrong?
I am running a stock 5.1 I have had this issue with previous OS's.
Thanks for any help.

Doesn't seem like a problem with the tablet. Possibly there's interference in your area. It could be other WiFi networks, appliances, many things.

You need to scan the WiFi environment, determine the best setup for your situation and configure the router and phone accordingly. To find the best setup try using WiFi Overview 360. The free version is probably all you need but the Pro version is cheap. The Google Fiber guys use it to setup WiFi when doing installations.

A few general tips:
If you have a dual band router, and most routers are, give the 5GHz and 2.4 GHz bands different SSID names. When setting up the 5GHz band usually it's best to set the router to use a channel well over 100. Over 150 if there's a clear channel. For both bands of course use channels with the least interference and best signal.

Thanks crashdamage. I will try these out tonight. I also did some goggling and have a few other things to try. It would be nice to get this thing flying again.

I gathered these up over the net and none of them worked. Still got the sporadic speeds on the net. Maybe it is time for a new tablet.

After changing the location mode from "High accuracy" to "Battery saving" my download speed went up to 62.59 Mbps! This is in line with my N10 pre-4.4.2 speed on 5Ghz (it's the only device in my house on the 5Ghz band).

Same problem on my gs4 active after installing 4.4.2. Found that it's the bluetooth
If bluetooth is off: no problem
If bluetooth is paired: no problem
If bluetooth is unpaired: 1/6 wifi speed available

Having exhausted all other suggestions here and elsewhere, I was totally out of ideas and started thinking about faults beyond the tablet. My wireless router is a dual-band router though I don't really use the 5gHz (till now - read on). Everything wireless in the house -- which isn't all that much, mind you -- uses the 2.4gHz band. For the heck of it, I created a wireless profile for the 5gHz band and forced the tablet onto it. The moment I did this, the dropping vanished! As I've typed and revised this post over 15 to 20 minutes, I've had the desktop pinging the tablet. Not one dropped packet.

  • If your tablet is on, power it off.
  • Press and hold Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down at the same time for several seconds. You will see the wordStart with an arrow drawn around it.
  • Press Volume Down twice, until you see the option Recovery mode.
  • Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You should see an image of an Android with a red exclamation point.
  • While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
  • Use the Volume keys to scroll to wipe cache partition and press Power to select it.
  • When complete, highlight reboot system now, and press Power.

Try changing the wifi channel on the router? Check the local traffic using Wifi Analyzer to see if there are a lot of nearby routers using the same channel.

Solved it !

The culprit was location services mode being in "battery saving". If I switch to either of the other two modes it runs solid as a rock. Ping drops from 40 to 15ms, speed goes from 14 to 23 Mbs, and the speed is constant over time. I tried switching back and forth several times and I can repeat the effect.

Wow- that really is bad. I have to assume you have rebooted the N10 already as a test. You might also want to try rebooting the wifi router and also "forgetting" the connection on the N10 and then re-establishing it again to see if that will help. As a last resort, you can try changing the settings on the router to see if there is something the 5.0 N10 doesn't like. For example, changing protocol (AC vs. N vs. G), frequency (2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz), channel, or channel width.

Sit next to your router - works for me. Mine's been like this since installing 5.0 and now 5.1

I've factory reset it. I've installed the OTA, wiped and flashed the factory image. Nothing works. The only proven solution that I've found is to return to 4.4. Plenty of people are having exactly the same issue. Pretty sure it's linked to weak wifi signals and/or certain routers and firmware.
