Smartlock does not work

While I am here and posting on another (more urgent) I issue, I will ask this question, which has bugged me for a long time: why does Smartlock not work ?

I have set it up on numerous different phones I have owned over the years and it has not worked on any of them, ever. Trusted places does not work, trusted devices does not work, and on-body detection does not work. Much as I would like to be doing something else, I still spend many long minutes at home every day entering my phone password when I should not have to be doing that.

I found one post not long ago that recommended removing the home address entered in the trusted places option and replacing it with corresponding geographic coordinates selected off the map. I was very hopeful about that one because it seemed to make some remote kind of sense. But nah, that didn't work either.

Is this one of those Emperor's New Clothes things where everyone agrees to pretend that it work when it doesn't ? Or am I doing something drastically wrong ? Or have I just had bad luck ?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

No not necessarily because my Smart Lock Works flawlessly on all of my devices. Maybe you're not setting it up correctly. Could you write in detail on how you set your Smart Lock locker up and the location you're setting it up in?

I've never had much success with it. The only thing i ever got to work consistently is trusted device. It works on my car, phew.

Now I have a fingerprint unlock so I'm happy.

What version of Android and phone do you have?

I've never actually seen this "Smartlock" on any phones I've had. Is it a feature that only certain manufacturers put on their devices?...like Google Pixel phones?

Nearest thing I can find is on my Huawei Mate 10 is Smart Unlock, which unlocks the phone if a known nominated BT device is within range, and that works perfectly. There's no maps or coordinates or anything else fancy required for that.

It has worked for me on my last three HTC devices using 'On-body Detection', 'Trusted Places' and 'Trusted Devices'.

Although I had to use the 'add trusted place' function using Lat/Long coordinates because I share a postcode with another property some 350 yards away and don't have a precise street address and the postcode locates to the other property on Google Maps.

With the trusted place function I did find that occasionally it would need to be re-enabled and then do a reboot before it would work.

Smart unlock worked perfectly for me while i was using nougat. I updated to Oreo about the same time I got a new watch and that's when I started getting intermittent disconnects. No i'd say it works 60% of the time when it's supposed to but I haven't been able to see a pattern. I suppose I should reset all my devices, but I'm too lazy. ;)
