Smartphone newbie from Boston

SMBguy

Lurker
Hi, I'm Dave, or as my fishing friends call me...the SMBguy. That stands for Smallmouth Bass Guy. I do enjoy fishing for them. I'm newly relocated to the Metro West area near Boston, MA. I just purchased my very 1st smartphone, a MetroPCS LG Connect 4g. Of course I have many questions , so I decided to join this group. I hope that the kind folks here can help turn this "newbie" into a seasoned pro. As I said, I'm Brand new, so any suggestions, guides, anything that will help me out will be appreciated. Remember, I'm new at this, so please enlighten me with the lingo too (rooted? unrooted? - what's that?). Areas of interests are 1) downloading music to phone (Best sound vs format), 2) creating my own ringtones (love that Woo-Hoo song), 3) downloading and watching a DVD movie ( file size vs format), and most important is ensuring a good wi-fi connection (seems like I'm having problems in the Cleveland circle/ Brookline area (work) - is it Metro or me? Even a simple explanations of Icons would help. I'm sure there must be a FAQ guide as well. Anyway, looking forward to learning what I can or can't do with my LG Connect.

Welcome to Android Forums Dave. I'm in Douglas, MA so not far away. I love fishing too, but I normally just catch a buzz and a sunburn.

Well check out your device's forum to get started:LG Connect 4G - Android Forums
Reading the sticky threads in that forum and the All Things root subforum should get you some basics (and not so basics).;)
We all started as nitwits new users finding our way. Many became seasoned pros from this site alone. I still learn everyday.

Rooted is simply like having admin rights to your phone. Think of it as logging in as administrator on a PC or having a master key to the office.

The rest of this I'll let others chime in on as I only dabble. Enjoy your stay here at AF.

Thanks for the "Hello". I'm actually in Natick, and was a Western MA resident for 11 years (West Brookfield), before a job took me to Shelton, CT (Near New Haven). for 6month. Unforgiven, you sound a bit like my fishing buddy, except I help him catch fish. LOL. I'll check out the LG Connect forum. Also just DL'ed the Phandroid apps (2?). Thank you Unforgiven, xmr405o, and DonB for the immediate tips.
