Smartwatch for grandfather - with tracking

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for a smartwatch for my grandfather. He has problems with memory, so we are afraid that one day he will be not able to back home and we would like to track him. Right now he has a phone with a tracking system which is very convenient however from time to time he does not want to take it or he can easily lose it. So I'm looking for the watch that's allowed as to work without a connection to the phone. It doesn't have to be very modern and expensive it must work only. I had bought already some Chinese one NO.1 G8, however, the sim card did not work so I returned it. The other questions are what kind of requirement my watch have to have GPS and Sim card if I understand well? Or Just a sim card?
Thanks for any advice.
Marcin

Hi there - getting a good watch with eSim function is going to be a matter of 'you get what you pay for'. In the case of making sure your grandfather doesn't get lost (or can be tracked down if he does), you are well advised to spend a little extra and get something reliable.

The Huawei Watch 2 Classic (2018) is a nice looking watch, full Wear OS capability, and the global version has a GSM eSim capability. It will soon receive the newest Wear OS update so he will be able to tell it to take him home - and it will give him directions. Meanwhile, you should be able to install an app on your phone and his watch so YOU can find out where he is.

EDIT: In fact, there is a Wear OS app called "My Location" that will tell him where he is and how to get back.

It is very affordable: as we head into the holiday season, you can get a great deal on a refurbished or gently used one.
