Dude I have that same MMS problem..!! Is it usually Former Alltel customers trying to send them? I don't get them from Alltel phones but I get them from T-mobile users and Verizon users. Get back to me on this.I was quite happy with Handcent too until I read it can randomly delete messages and these messages once deleted are lost forever. I have a new Droid and am new to Verizon and am having an issue with receiving picture messages so I wasn't sure if it was Verizon or Handcent. I have since uninstalled it and really miss it and am not sure yet if I'm still missing MMS or not.
If I can confirm it's a service issue I will install it again.

I returned my Verizon BlackBerry Storm 3 times because of this.. and I got an Eris for free, and now it still doesn't receive MMS from anyone who used to have Alltel. I receive them just fine from T-mobile and Verizon users. I don't get it.. if you want you can give me your # and I can try to send you a pic? If it works then you probably just have the same problem I do, but maybe not..I don't know but it seems like some of them are T-Mobile users. I found a list from Verizon of providers that should be able to send/receive MMS and T-Mobile is on it so I don't understand. I ported my number from T-Mobile which shouldn't have anything to do with it but I assumed it was Handcent since it should just work otherwise. Looks like a call to Verizon is in order. Ugh. Not having good experiences with Verizon at all so far....
chompSMS is significantly faster than Handcent for me.
I haven't had any major issues with SMS Popup.
I liked this as well but went with Handcent for the additional features.
