The days of backing up text messages to a sim card or an SD card are gone. While those were okay for some, there were others who just needed more flexibility with their text messages. I know as well as the next person that certain text messages should not be deleted. They may be from an important client, a business partner, or a cute little message from your boyfriend or girlfriend. This is where SMS Backup comes in. The app allows you to back up SMS (text) messages from your Android device straight to your Gmail account.

Upon startup, you are greeted with a settings menu, which is the entire user interface for the app. You'll see where it says "idle" because the app isn't doing anything at the moment, with another button that says "Backup Now". Before these get used, you will need to input your user information. Once you enter your username and password, you're all set to start backing up. I always chose to do an auto backup, because then I never have to worry about forgetting to run the app. It will use a little bit more battery, but for me, it's a small sacrifice. Another simple menu in the advanced settings allows you to mark items as read or not once in Gmail (I always do), as well as the name of the label and maximum number of items for each backup. Once these settings are done, you're ready to run your first backup.

Go back to the main menu, and press the "Backup Now" button. This will start the process, which can initially take quite a bit of time, especially depending on how many messages you have currently. Once your backup is complete, you're done! From here on out, SMS Backup will automatically back up your messages for you to your gmail account, so you can keep your phone's inbox clean and clutter free.

A powerful app like this is a great tool for managing space and performance on your phone. It allows you to keep your messaging inbox clear, which provides faster response and greater ease of use when texting. It also keeps your messaging cache clear, which provides more free space. And last, but certainly not least, you will never again have to think to yourself how you wish you hadn't accidentally deleted that important message!
