why would verizon iphones recieve my texts but my brand new S3 will not get theirs?

Did you come from an iPhone before? You didn't turn imessage off before getting the S3 and apple assumes you won't leave them ever so their system is still logging your number for imessage. This means friends with iphones are sending as imessage to your S3. You need to log into your iTunes account and un-register your phone number from it.

thanks! sure never saw this from att or samsung. that is: remove iphone from my devices under account in itunes store correct? That leaves 2 other devices: my imac and mbair. That ok? Thanks
