sms-only ringtone?

is it possible to set a notification sound for SMS and a different one for E-mails?
or, better yet, a notification sound for SMS from number X, other for other numbers, and other for E-mails?

I guess an app would be needed

2) Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't looked either. Perhaps an app such as handcent or chompsms would have that option...

I tried many times, but it's not working
when I set a custom SMS ringtone for someone, I just stop receiving SMSs from this person

SMSPopup lets you set custom SMS notifications for each contact (remember to switch off notifications in the stock application if using this).

Unless I'm missing something in your post, the stock apps let you set different notification tones for GMail, EMail, SMS notifications.
