Help SMS screen waking

So every time I get a text message the screen lights up, then will go back to sleep. Is there a way to get the screen to stay off when getting a text? I have an led light for a reason lol. I don't need the screen to wake every time bc to me thats wasting battery

I don't think it's possible with the stock message app. Handcent does have this option though.
