Help SMSless aim w/ Gmail?

I don't have a G1 yet but hopefully I can pick one up this week. I noticed that you can now chat with your aim contacts via GChat on GMail.

Does this work as well on the G1? If so, I'll just get the 400 sms plan.

That only works from gmail.But using a jabber transport will work.
