I imagine that they need a connection to sync to your phone, so does that mean they have to access your cellular network when you're out an about. Is that the only way, or can they connect to your phone through Bluetooth and communicate that way?

I wasn't sure whether the phones and watches synced via Bluetooth, or whether you needed a mobile/wireless network connection for them to function. The reason I was asking is because there was a deal at one of the wireless carriers to get the watch half off if you put it on contract. If these need to be on contract, then it would definitely be a no go for me because I'm not paying extra every month just to have a smartwatch. But based on what you're saying, that shouldn't be an issue.

I know one of my coworkers picked up a discounted/free Galaxy Gear (2? I don't remember) when he upgraded his phone on a new contract with Verizon.

Right but the contract would be for the phone itself, not for the watch. That is the part I am confused about. Is the contract on the watch itself? Because that would not make sense.

To my knowledge, android wear devices have no mobile radios in it. All internet access is achieved through bluetooth or wifi. Since it doesn't touch the network, I can't imagine there's a contract tied to it but rather it's just an expensive accessory like a case or wireless charger.

Yeah, that's how Verizon is treating them. If you have a corporate discount on accessories, you get that towards your smart watch too. That's not a bad deal really.
