So much for scratch resistant gorilla glass 2

Well, as it always works for me I dropped my phone the day the case is due to arrive.

I was getting out of the elevator in my building and dropped it on the floor of the elevator. The phone was completely naked.
The phone in the stone floor and my heart started to pound. I picked it and there was not a scratch on the body of the phone, i turned over the phone and everything looked ok.

I get back to my desk and notice a line about an inch from the top of the screen . I tried to wipe it off and sure enough it was still there. I ran my finger nail over it and realized it was a scratch on the screen.

Isnt it suppose to be "tough and scratch resistant as ever to withstand the unexpected abuses of everyday life."
Guess not :(

But it is my fault for not making sure it was in my pocket before releasing it.

Scratch resistant is not the same as scratch proof. Even if the screen was diamond, which is by definition the most scratch resistant material known, it can still get scratched.

Sorry, but it does still happen.

You might want to look into a screen protector. Basically just a thin plastic sheet placed over the screen with a thin liquid to hold it in place.

Bummer.. I've had mine a month now and have yet to drop it once.. I treat it like carrying a newborn child or a pot of gold.

Can we all have a moment of silence for our poor friend kboss375......................................................................... Thank you. :bawling:

That just sounds like moment of bad luck for your phone... I have an S2 that is 10 months old with unprotected Gorilla Glass, and it's been dropped and everything else you can imagine without any major scratches. If I clean the screen to crystal clear, I can only see a couple of very minor scratches. They almost look like a peice of dust, since they are so small. There is practically no way to see them with the screen lit up. With that said, having the silky smooth screen with no screen protector is the way I'll run the GS3.

Sorry to hear about the screen. Maybe you can replace the screen with no deductable on your insurance? Depends on your provider I guess? Sprint would not have been a problem.

It's all on how it falls and hits the ground. Sometimes nothing happens, other times it breaks completely, or, in your case, it scratches. I hope you are able to get a replacement, but make sure to put a screen protector on the screen.

Going to pick up my screen protector today too.
On to the Moto Droid, that thing took a beating for sure and never cracked.
Like I said, it is all my fault anyways, just needed to vent a little bit lol.

Gorilla glass is highly scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Very easy concept to grasp. Its not meant to survive drops, that's why we buy cases. Cases protect the phone from falls, and gorilla glass won't scratch from daily routine use. Making screen protectors a want and not a need. Some get by with no screen protectors while others want the extra protection.

Yeah... You're not meant to drop your phone every day though :p and you're lucky it didn't shatter.

FYI: sand will scratch the crap out of gorilla glass so be careful on the beach. As will fine bits of dirt.

"stone floor"

granite... mother nature's gorilla glass. :( impervious to knives and keys, but not a grain of sand.

All the users who say they dont need a screen protector should take heed. Mines been in a clear hard plastic case + screen protector since day one.. Also use a thin leather pouch when I'm out/When its in pocket. Call it overkill but I like knowing my half a grand phone is kept pristine.. Dropped it in a restaurant last week which had stone flooring, Thanks to all the above nothing happened to it!!

Incidentally there was a very tragic story in tonights local paper about a 46 year old teacher who was an experienced cyclist who normally wore a helmet. Having finished maintaining his bike he told his wife he was "taking it round the block to test it". She never saw him alive again because he had forgotten a bolt in the brake gear - he fell off the bike onto the road and suffered a fatal brain injury because he didn't wear his helmet. A moments inattention and all is lost. :(

Wow that sucks. Sorry to the OP for the bad luck. I had a Droid X naked for about a year that nothing happened to, but I've also dropped and broken the screen of BB Storm 2 that the protector held together long enough to get through until the new phone came in. The problem I have with the screen protectors is if you use apps like keyring for reward/pfc cards or even for airline tickets the scanners don't seem to scan through the protectors. Does anyone have a protector they've used and had good success getting scanners to pick up barcode info from the screen? I have my phone in a shell holster case and it offers a little protection to the screen because the case edge is a little higher than the screen so if it hits flat ground or the like the case takes the impact.

Carrying your phone without some type of case for protection is just asking for trouble. Would would you be surprised at a scratch when its being dropped from 4-5 feet onto a stone floor with no protection?

had mine 3 weeks noticed a tiny 2mm scratch on screen iv put a screen protector on no big deal...but i previously had a original htc desire for 2-3 years before and that never got a scratch, just sayin

I will say this though, we are very fortunate to have all these similar models of the S3. Replacement parts will be abundant and perhaps more reasonable. not iPhone reasonable, but better than we've had before. The S3 is very serviceable, even by the patient end user (you most likely dont need a repair center). If you break something, you wont have to live with it forever. I suspect we'll see all these parts available soon. I would hope the bonded LCD/Glass would be in the $150 range (the parts for branded US versions of the S2 were more more expensive and harder to find than the international version)

I've had my droid x fall 6 feet to asphalt and slide 6 or 7 feet face down on concrete and asphalt on several occasions and there isn't even the slightest scratch when looking at the screen at reflected light in just the right way to show scratches if they were there, so I think it's quite unfortunate that an even more scratch resistant glass scratched from a mere drop like the OP reported.

My DX has been naked for 2 years and has survived just fine being dropped dozens of times onto concrete and asphalt.

Sorry to hear this mate :( I know i'd be gutted if this happened to me.

This is when I laugh at all the posts in the screen protector thread stating you cant scratch it, iPhones have had gorilla glass and gorilla glass 2 as soon as the technology was available and none have been scratch proof - there's no such thing as glass that cant be scratched.
