Lurker
The short of it: I want to be able to record video and do something else at the same time.

The long of it: So let's say my nephew (great kid, I love him) is obsessed with the fact that he can do all sorts of silly dances that my cell phone camera (HTC Incredible) will record... and let's say he insists on dancing for MINUTES AND MINUTES ON END. Is there any way I can start the record feature and then move to web browsing while it's still recording? (right now, the camera seems to stop recording every time I try to switch to another app by holding the home button) I'm pretty confident I could keep the camera aimed at him while checking phandroid and faking a giant smile. :) I'm a good uncle, I promise! It's not as if we AREN'T going to watch the silly dances as soon as he's done and wants to see them, anyway! lol

Anyway, I'd appreciate the help to make my life a bit saner. Thanks!

I don't think it can. Maybe a different app can, but the stock Camera app can't as far as I know.

well it's definitely possible to code a camera app that would do that and it may even exist already, but i'd imagine the video recording would eat a lot of the processing power needed to do much else in any kind of timely fashion

Man, this video had gotten me excited to the idea that it was possible... kinda wish I hadn't gotten my hopes up now. :(

YouTube - Multitasking on the Droid.

That's more or less what the OP wants. I could probably do that on my Eris (although the video recording would be NOWHERE near that smooth).

I think what the OP wants is the camera to run in the background, while he's on the internet.

Yeah you're right, I would want to be able to run the camera in the background.

I'll have to check into third-party video camera apps that might be able to do this.

It's a bit strange to me that (using the onboard software) you can start another app in the background and THEN start recording video, but not vice versa.
