Help Soft keys activating when I press elsewhere on the screen

I have found that my Nexus One's screen will seem to become uncalibrated and the area for the soft keys' area will extend about half way up the screen about 10 times a month. This seems to happen more after watching a lengthy fullscreen movie or tv show. It also seems to be exacerbated by having the device plugged in. This problem is remedied by restarting the device, but I must use the tracball to navigate the menus since the screen is rendered almost completely inoperable.
There is no particular program that is linked with this behaviour, it can happen in any program or even on the home screen with nothing running. I am hesitant to think it is a software issue given the fact that it happens more frequently when the device is plugged in, but I am unsure.
Has anyone else experienced this? Hopefully it isn't some sort of short, but I really don't know and it seems to be getting worse. Thanks kindly for your help.

I have the same problem. It seems to correlate to the phone getting very warm or to when I haven't rebooted in 24 hours or so. Rebooting has always fixed it for me. I was advised by TMobile customer support that the phone should be rebooted daily. When I do that, the touchscreen problem tends not to occur ... although my reminder to reboot tends to be the touchscreen going haywire. My guess is that it's a hardware problem with the touchscreen. It works off the heat of your fingers, so if the entire device heats up from prolonged use, that could confuse the touchscreen, leaving the trackball as the only navigation option. Annoying.

Since my original post I have done a factory reset of my phone. This seems to have remedied the problem for now. Even when the phone gets hot the softkeys don't misbehave. I don't need to incessantly restart the phone either.
