Software for .TAR files

I need to download a software to open .TAR files. I can download them no prob, but my computer cannot open them. I have never done anything like this; I have no idea what I am doing. If someone can point out to me which would be the best for Windows 7 64bit I will love you forever and give you a cookie.
 
.tar files are similar to zip files. Only for Linux, not windows.

What are you downloading?
 
You're not supposed to unpack it, just use the entire file, as seen in step 6:

Click the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the "CWM2.5_Voodoo.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier. This file does not include a voodoo kernel and will not perform the voodoo lagfix conversion. It's only named as such to note that it is compatible with voodoo kernels.

You dont need to unpack it .
Odin files are .tar or .tar.md5
basically odin files are images dumped from phone in tar ball archives
md5 sum is attached to prevent corruption
Just load normally and your phone will be restored ...\

Okay what about the 4th file?: Download "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders). su-2.3.6.1.x.zip

I did so, but I did not unpack it. I did not see it on my phone when I was on this step: 13. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.

So Odin can use tar files even though my computer cannot read it? Thanks! Good to know.
 
I didn't know that software on a computer can use certain file types even if the computer itself cannot. It's good to learn.

Errrr....

Thats often the case.

Your computer cannot open .tar files as it doesn't have the software to associate with those file types.

You could install 7-zip and have an application associated with .tar. Or you could install ODIN and have an application associated with .tar

Thats just the same as any other 3rd party or proprietary file format. Your computer cannot open .pdf files without Adobe Acrobat or similar. But you can still e-mail them ;)

Now you need to navigate to that file via recovery using "choose zip from SD card option "
Try mounting sd card if there is a mounts menu .

You dont need to extract that zip ,it will be a moot point .
 
Actually, it's not a matter of using it so much as being able to manipulate it. Windows does not natively support the use of .tar archives, but 3rd party archivers (like 7-zip and WinRAR) do support the manipulation of these files even though Windows itself does not use them.

Also, when you copied the su.....zip file to your phone, did you make sure it was in the SDCard, (the external removable SDCard) and that it was in the root (main directory, as in /, as in no sub directories)?
 
Okay, thanks for the explanations! I got it all figured out now!

I found the root file on the SD card btw. It was just another duh moment.

And I am rooted now! Yay. I see superuser in my app drawer now.

Now to delete those damn bloatware! And do lots of stuff.

(but first I have to actually figure out how to delete the bloatware lol.)
 
use Link2SD or Titanium Backup Pro to first "freeze" the bloatware .If phone works fine then only delete it .
