I'm wanting to use this computer as a wireless hotspot and so far the easiest way to do that is from within Ubuntu Unity. my Belkin router died and so far i am using a very nice new laptop as a 'router' but i want the Dell to take its place. only one thing stops me.

it does have a DVD-RW drive built into it, but when attempting to boot the Ubuntu DVD, it gets as far as the menu (showing things like start live distro, start install) but every option just makes the drive blink four times and wind down, and nothing happens--but the computer no longer responds to input. the same screen is just frozen until i turn it off manually. same happens with a Kubuntu and Pear Linux disc. if it's a DVD it only boots to the boot menu but nothing when i select an option. the discs work fine in other machines. it lacks a card reader and cannot boot off USB. is there something else i can try? i hate using my good laptop as a router when i have an older one that is just perfect for the job! obviously it reads the DVD otherwise it would not even boot at all. it just refuses to do anyhing after the main menu.

EDIT: nevermind. it works fine with a 32-bit DVD. i was booting 64-bit on a 32-bit CPU. what an idiot i was. mods please delete this thread! thanks!
