Help [SOLVED] Get rid of this annoyance? (Chrome issue)

When I was setting up Chrome on my new phone (Moto Z² Force Edition running Oreo 8.0.0), I distinctly remember being prompted to choose, or not choose, this particular feature and I chose to, and then stepped through its settings.

See the 'cut copy paste' bar:

That's the feature I'm talking about.

I don't like it! It appears on its own, randomly, like when I was trying to type this thread's title.

The ONLY way I've found to dismiss it is to actually pick one of its choices; there's no exit, no way to move it, it can't be swiped away, etc.

So I want to get rid of the damned thing...but can't find its settings anywhere. Please, someone, enlighten me!

Yes, thank you, I've checked anything and everything, even though it's a Chrome feature that I set up in Chrome. *bewildered*

I've never seen it as a persistent bar, it only pops up when i select text. If all else fails you could delete the cache and data for chrome.

But do you recall where you set it up? I can't find its settings anywhere. It's literally popping up on its own...A LOT!

I'll wait a bit before deleting cache and data, in case anyone knows where its settings are.

I don't recall ever setting anything up in regards to cut an paste. It always just popped up when i selected any text.

You know, that's how I THOUGHT I remembered it on my previous phone--which I still use and does not do this annoying behavior.

But on my new phone, it was presented to me as one of a zillion Chrome options, and contained all sorts of options itself. But now, for the life of me, I cannot find its settings.

Um...yeah...if you look at the screenshot in my OP, you should notice that I don't use Gboard, I use Hacker's Keyboard.

This seems to be an issue with the amount of time, set in milliseconds (ms), that you have selected as the amount of time for a 'long press' to activate.

This should be found buried within the settings of your keyboard (any keyboard).

You have stated that you use Hacker's Keyboard (I do too, but a FOSS version), so it would be a good idea to make sure that you set all of your different keyboards to the same amount of long press time, in case you ever switch off for any reason.

I will attempt to post a short video showing where this adjustment is in the settings of Hacker's Keyboard.

The ONLY way I've found to dismiss it is to actually pick one of its choices; there's no exit, no way to move it, it can't be swiped away, etc.

Try clicking the back button on your phone. I can make it go away on all my phones by simply clicking the back button. However it only pops up when I long press on text. If it's popping up randomly without your long press input, then hacker's keyboard is to blame.

When I initiate it, it can be dismissed with the back button. It's when it's popped up [seemingly] on its own that nothing dismisses it except actually choosing one of its options.

You've lost me! How is Hacker's to blame? I have the same keyboard, with the same settings, on my other phone, but this has never popped up unless I long-pressed on something.

Thanks, but I'd already checked all of Hacker's settings against my other phone, and they're all the same; I have long-press set to 400ms on both phones.

This annoying behavior has never happened on the 4-year-old phone, just the brand-new one.

Settings > keyboard ,have you tried clearing that cache?

And when that pops up on my screen, if I just quickly tap anywhere on some text it will vanish.

It pops up on me often when I am scrolling.

Wow! I long ago forgot about this thread--and problem.

As noted, when it was popping up on its own, there was NOTHING that would dismiss it other than actually selecting one of its choices.

At any rate, the problem went away on its own. Probably a bug that a Chrome update fixed.

On my computers, I strictly use SeaMonkey, but it doesn't have an Android version. I used to use, or try, a bunch of browsers, including Opera, Firefox, DuckDuckGo and more. When I got my latest phone, I just thought 'to hell with it!' and went with Chrome.

I've gone through all of Google's and Chrome's security/privacy settings with a fine-tooth comb. Anything they're still able to glean about my life is pretty damn boring, so I don't care!

They are also known for disobeying consumer settings.

FireFox as well, and slower than molassas in Alaska.

Opera is owned by the Chinese, and the others all have some fatal flaw.

Why not go FLOSS?

Yes, thank you, I'm familiar with F-Droid.

I only use paid apps, unless there isn't a paid version but its in-app purchase feature replaces ads (like the Candy Crush family). As a former programmer, I like to reward developers of apps I like and use by paying for them. I appreciate the time, knowledge, and creativity that go into a great app.

Google is your warden.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Google in no way dictates or controls what I do.

I used to root my Android devices, but no longer see the need.

By the way, what OS do you use on your computers?
