[Solved] RAM question. Effects performance??

so I just looked up what RAM is and now I'm curious to know 2 things:

- What amount of RAM is adequate for ideally high end performance on the N7?

- Why is my RAM always at or around 500mb no matter how much I kill...

the n7 has a gig and android is a big OS so is the google stuff

I understand that and thanks for the reply. I'm gonna rephrase my question, I believe you misinterpreted :) so I'm wondering if my RAM usage is at 500mb (half capacity) would that slow down my N7 considerably or would I not even notice?

And my other question is if I have no apps running, why is my RAM still just under 500mb?

RAM is random access memory, it's used to store information like apps you have open and processes that you are undergoing so that next time you open the app it loads quicker and remembers your status.

When your ram is full it won't necessarily slow down your tablet but it will prevent your tablet from writing more information to the RAM, meaning that opening NEW applications and undergoing NEW processes will perform slowly, but if you're only using what you have been using previously then you most likely won't notice any differences.

What's taking up the RAM? My best guess is that it would be system processes and system applications that cannot be killed without shutting down the tablet. As mentioned above, Android is quite a hefty sized mobile OS. I wouldn't worry about anything to do with the RAM, unless you are experiencing problems with certain applications 'hogging' the RAM, in which case your best bet would be to un-install that application.

The nexus 7 has been developed and tested by professionals, they know what this tablet requires and they know what specifications it needs to live up to expectations, without overdoing (resulting in terrible battery life and cooling issues) the hardware brawn.

Great explanation! So what I'm gathering is its like a scrolling cache but on a much larger scale and for the applications with limited space. (Unless I'm misinterpreting scrolling cacehe lol) Now I understand what Cammy was saying :) not gonna worry about RAM no more... thanks guys :D

I'm finding 4.1.1 is really efficient at handling memory, using up ram can slow the computer, especially in windows but I've never really run into that on android and particularly ICS+.

Don't worry about memory in the N7 or any Android device. Android is optimized to run at near memory capacity to increase both performance and battery life. You may notice apps loaded into memory that you infrequently or never use. Don't worry about it. When you load up the apps you want to use, it will close these apps automatically. As you use your device more, it will learn what apps you use and preload those into memory so when you go to use it, it opens quickly.

Tell that to my phone running gingerbread. I have to constantly kill apps because it has so little memory. I think your advice pertains more to the newer models but two year old phones have problem when you open several applications. I'm not saying it is exactly because of the OS but simply due to the amount of ram available on the device.

Either way, I agree people should not worry about the amount of memory on the Nexus 7. I am constantly opening new applications and I still have not seen a decrease in performance. I have not tested the battery life though.
