Some advice greatly appreciated

Hi Guys

If you have a moment Id like some advice.

I have just moved to China for work and am living in a city of 1.2million but I am the only westerner. My Chinese language skills suck at present and I think I have work convinced to lash out and buy me a good phone on which I can download apps like translators. This is particularly important as I will also be traveling a lot and its taking me ages playing charades when trying to organise anything here, including getting a cold beer.

I will need to be able to link the phone if possible to my work email, read attachments incl pics + pdfs, easily receive MMS, obviously the net and preferably be able to charge it via a USB cable .

Of the HTC models out there, which do you recommend for my needs? Sorry but Im not all that tech minded...
 
All Android phones can do all of the above just fine. Any specific requirements? Camera, screen size, processor, keyboard or no keyboard?
 
Hi Grainy, thanks for the reply. Sorry should have been more specific. No keyboard, a decent camera, another processor to run excel spreadsheets if needed. Preferably no larger then an iPhone. Would like something with decent battery life too. Thanks. Should add it should be pretty robust as I work in a Gold Mine and travel a bit rough at times :)

PS will be buying it unlocked as will be using a China SIM.

How soon do you want a new phone? Right now if you don't want a keyboard and want the latest-and-greatest in hardware and software from HTC, your choice is limited to the Nexus One: 3.7-inch screen, 5MP camera, battery life pretty good after the second recharge cycle or so--you can expect about 13 hours of uptime with moderate-to-heavy use. Camera quality is quite decent, and I can attest that the flash is BLINDINGLY BRIGHT AAAHHHH MY EYES. Don't point it at people. :P

If you wait until April, there'll be the HTC Desire and HTC Legend. If you want tough, the Legend is real tough--aluminium body, smashed against wall during a demonstration to show just how durable it is. The screen is still glass, but it's probably one of the toughest Android phones ever, HTC or not. The specs are a bit beneath the Desire's and the N1's, but I understand it still performs pretty well (probably better battery life, since it's got a slower processor).
 
My dream application:

An app that can translate chinese or japanese text by using camera phone!

I just cannot believe nobody has yet created this kind of useful application.

I will buy one in heart beat :D
 
Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I have been doing a LOT of reading and am thinking of holding out until the legend arrives next month, mainly based on the durability mentioned above - thanks. I do like the extra power in the Desire but doubt I'll need it.

And yes hands up hi for the App that reads either or both languages.... :)

Sorry to ask a dopey question but if google does pull the pin, how could/would that impact on me?
