Root Some questions before i root...

So i got the droid razr as my first smartphone (actually got the gnex first but hated the hardware), and im happy with it, but i kinda want to be able backup, tether the data thats already being payed for (limited), take screenshots and use aftermarket launchers to the full extent...but ive got some questions about it...

1. Ive got the insurance, so if i drop it and it breaks, can VZW find out and deny me a replacement?

2. Can i undo it?

3. whats the best way to do it (from an ubuntu linux box)?

4. Slightly off topic...but does barnacle work? or did VZW block it form working?

5. Can I still get ics when it comes out?

1) Yes, rooting technically voids your warranty.

2) Yes, it can be undone.

3) Through the one-click root available on XDA HERE

4) In this case, tethering from VZW without purchasing their tethering plan is considered "theft of service" and the owner of the this privately owned site prohibits discussion on ways to circumvent it.

5) Depends. Currently there is a leaked 2.3.6 build and our current root method doesn't work. However, you can retain root when going from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6. Go figure!

Hope that helps!! :)

If you have the $7 insurance and you drop and break it, you pay the deductible (50 or 80 bucks I think) and they give you a new phone.

If you break it, they probably won't be able to tell/ won't care to look if you rooted, if that is what you are asking.

Another thing we don't typically discuss here at Android Forums are recommendations of how to defraud the insurance company!

If you purchase the optional insurance and need to use it... it's a good thing that it's there. If you purchased the insurance and never use it... well it's insurance after all!

One more thing. You must sign up for the verizon cheap insurance ($1.99 a month plan) within 30 days of purchase or you can't get it. Stupid thing is that the phone comes with a one year warranty. So you're paying for insurance at least 11 months minimum and not even using it.

After a year the phone should drop in price. Might be enough that insurance wasn't even worth it.

The one year warranty only covers problems due to mfg defect.
Insurance covers breakage, 'drowning', etc - not really the same thing, or an overlap in coverage.

I dont think the cheap $1.99 insurance covers drowning or you breaking the phone. I think it only covers manufacturers defects.

I think you need the third party insurance with deductable to cover what you're saying. of course that's more money a month.
