Help Something keeps killing essential downloaded apps

kimaku

Lurker
Phone: Cubot X15 running stock Android 5.1. NOT rooted.
I have a few free and paid apps that need to run all the time. They are:
Rotate (paid), Should I Answer?, Prof Reminder, Micro CPU Monitor (paid), Network Monitor Pro (paid).
A few weeks ago, all these apps would start shortly after boot, as they need to, and remain in memory, doing their stuff with scarcely any negative effect on battery consumption.
However, since about 10 days ago, NONE of them will start on boot, and if I start them from the appropriate app icon, they run immediately, but a few minutes later they have all been killed by some unknown agency. I have never installed any so-called Task Killers, or so-called System Cleaners, although from time to time I use the very modest Cleaner tool from ES File Explorer (which has severed me very well for the last 6 years or so). With a cheap (but GREAT!) Chinese phone like this, one doesn't have the luxury of OTA upgrades, so nothing like that can be responsible. Battery drain remains about the same as before.
I had previously tried rooting the phone, but the only thing that worked was KingRoot, which I didn't trust, as it uses its own secretive Chinese SuperUser, and won't allow any respectable Super User alternative to run. So about 3 months ago I cleared it out and flashed the latest factory ROM I could find, re-installing my modest list of fave apps from the Play Store, rather than any backup. And all the apps ran as desired since then, until the killing problem suddenly asserted itsself. I can't think of any app I installed around then that might account for it.
I'm totally puzzled, and have been unable to get any help from googling my problem, because all I get from such searches is stuff about how to STOP apps auto-loading -- I can find nothing about how to make sure certain apps DO load....
Are there any system logs I can access to to looke for clues to my problem?

A Cubot may well have a task killer as a system app that's killing your stuff. Have a look in the list of system apps for something like "Cheetah Mobile Clean Master SDK", or anything else that looks like a task killer thing, and see about possibly disabling it.

AFAIK Cubot and Cheetah Mobile are partners and do have an agreement for installing CM products on some Cubot devices. In fact Cubot have just launched the Cheetahphone. :thumbsupdroid:

Does it have some innocuously named app on it like "phone manager" or "battery optimizer"? I've tested a few Chinese phones with EMUI and they all seem to include something like this, which is essentially a rebranded version of CleanMaster. Many times they have the task killer set to be overly aggressive. But, there should also be a way to add your apps to a protected or safe list so it doesn't kill them.

Thanks for your reply. I naturally looked for anything with such a suspicious title when the problem started, but without success. Incidentally my son previously had an X15 like mine with no problems, but replaced it several months ago with one of those Cubot/Cheetah phones. He uses a lot; it's been trouble-free, very fast and responsive, and he's very pleased with it.

Thanks for reply. Can't find any suspicious-looking apps in Settings>Apps.
But I'd appreciate a link to any app designed to protect other apps from being killed. There are loads of Startup Manager things in Google Play Store, but they seem only to be concerned with preventing potentially unwanted apps from starting, whereas I need something the opposite of that...

If your son's X15 was OK and your X15 isn't. Could be you got a faulty one. It sounds like there's something funky going on with it. I would contact their customer service and support, and see if they can suggest anything, but ultimately it might need replacing and there's nothing else you can do. Possibly the apps are actually crashing, rather than been killed or stopped by the OS.

X15 kills apps and background services if they're removed from recent apps list. Also killed if they go too far back on the recent apps list. The solution is to flash the belulah ROM. It fixes this issue. Check this video.

Only just found your post OptimusGREEN -- thanks for the link. I'd like to know a bit more about this Beulah ROM, do you have a link with more info?
And do you happen to know of any mainstream type way to root X15 WITHOUT having to resort to Kingroot (which I've used in the past but don't trust...)

All info in video description.
Belulah ROM is rooted

@ OptimusGREEN: thanks for quick response -- I took note of the needrom source, but didn't realise it's already rooted. If I find root on the ROM works with SuperSU, no doubt I'll keep the ROM. Thanks again.

I think SuperSU is built into the ROM as it shows up as an option in settings.
