As far as I'm aware the only way would be to enter them surname first.

As far as I'm aware the only way would be to enter them surname first.

In addition, there are some non-google apps that can preform this function. I cannot suggest one as I have not used them but I do know they are available in the play store.

In the version of Contacts I have (called People actually, I think), you can tap the Menu key, then select Settings->Display Options and sort them by last name.

It would help if we knew what device you were using though.
