Speedtest.net on 3G comparison

First, i wasn't sure where to begin/add this thread as it spans different networks, different firmware versions and different manufacturers. I thought AT&T was the best-fit.

I have a Samsung captivate on AT&T which up until recently was running android 2.1. Last weekend, i updated to 2.2. I am seeing some significant speeds that i wanted to share to see if any others are having similar results.

Before i begin....
- Being on AT&T my test was with 3G.
- Network speeds will vary depending on where you are located.
- I did not see significant speed changes based on if i had had 4 bars or 1 bar.
- I used the free speedtest.net app on the market.
- I did not monitor upload speed, only download speed.
- I did not do my testing with WIFI.
- I don't live in large city, therefore i would expect my bandwidth to be less than larger urban area (except the infamous chicago at&t lagging network)

with android 2.1, i was getting data speeds of .4-.5Mbps download. With android 2.2, i am now getting speeds of .8-1Mbps download (once i got 2.34Mbps - and, no i hadn't been drinking...yet ). This has been consistent. I was monitoring my speeds with speedtest.net days before and continue to test days after the update. Now, it could be that AT&T did something to their network - but it would be coincidental. Regardless, i'm happier with the speed to where 3G seems usable.

I have read that other regions of the country (larger cities), people are getting 1.5Mbps, so its all relative.

One final test... A fellow coworker has a iphone 3G (AT&T), running iOS 4.0 on it. We both ran speedtest.net multiple times, side by side, and with my then android 2.1 i was getting twice the download speed as the iphone. He was getting around .2-.3Mbps. :)
