Root [Sprint/Cricket] Difference between kernels?

I've been looking into various ROMs and was wondering what the difference between kernels is. For example: in the people's rom there is stock, agat and knootz (sp?). What is the difference among them all and don't they have any effect on battery life? Thanks!

the do have an effect on battery life, and the affect on each phone varies. just try one, make a nand and try another to see how it goes. if its a bad experience, restore the nand you made
